Widnes Under 10’s win Rochdale
Festival
Once
again the Under 10’s proved their worth winning the Rochdale Festival,
the biggest competition in the North West, with 16 teams taking part.
In the
pool stages, Widnes beat Trafford 15-0, Melbourne (Derbyshire not
Australia) 20-0, and Warrington 25-0 to gain a place against Fylde in
the semi finals. The Wids made heavy work of it eventually winning 15-5
- the only try they conceded all day - before moving into the final to
face a well drilled Lymm side.
The final
started off well with the opening try scored by Josh Breeden from the
first play. The early scored settled Widnes down and after defending
strongly, gaps started to appear in the Lymm defence.
These
were exploited by Josh West who showed his outstanding pace, and well
deserved try scorer, Ewan Jones was unlucky not to score, twice touching
down but adjudged to have put a foot in touch. The Wids passing game and
awareness of space allowed them to play a fast expansive game, when the
conditions meant all others were keeping the ball in the forwards. Josh
Nolan, Captain, as ever led the team by example, with Man of the Day
going to Thomas ‘Chabal’ Jolley for his outstanding strength and
tackling.
Squad
with Tries:
Josh
Whittaker, Jonny Cooke, Edward Jones , Liam McKeown (1), Charlie
Burdekin (1), Thomas Jolley (4), Josh Nolan, Josh West (2), Jack
Jolley, Ben McQuillan (1), Josh Breeden (10), Ewan Jones.

Widnes RUFC win Vale Of Lune
Festival !
The Under 10’s played
some of their finest flowing rugby to come out eventual winners against
very strong opposition. Preston Grasshoppers, Fylde and Sedgley Park
were duly dispatched in the pool stages, with the Wids starting
brightly, for once.
Widnes met Vale of Lune
in the semis. Vale played an excellent running game, and in the first
half it was only through the Wids determined defence that they were
contained. Widnes opened up in the second half scoring 4 tries, winning
25-5.
The final against
Waterloo was a tense affair. Widnes and Waterloo had never met before.
Waterloo hadn’t been beaten for two years, and played with deserved
confidence.
The Wids tackled
everything that moved even though they were the physically much smaller
side. Pure commitment won through for Widnes, who due to their lack of
stature had to do it the hard way. Thomas Jolley, Josh Nolan and Josh
Breeden were the stand out players in the final for their outstanding
tackling. Ben McQuillan was awarded Man Of The Day for his efforts in
the pack. This group of players displayed maturity beyond their years in
another fantastic achievement.
Squad with tries; Josh
Whittaker, Jonny Cooke (1), Edward Jones, Liam McKeown (2), Charlie
Burdekin, Thomas Jolley (1), Josh Nolan (1), Josh West (2), Josh
Critchley, Jack Jolley (1), Dan Howard, Ben McQuillan, Josh Breeden (8),

Widnes U 10s 70 Ellesmere Port U
10s 0
Another big victory for
the Under 10’s against a big and aggressive Ellesmere Port side.
In glorious conditions,
the Wids played some fine flowing rugby with scores coming from backs
and forwards alike. Ewan Jones dominated the lineout , stealing plenty
of ball, but it was his work in the loose that earned him Man Of The
Match.
Charlie Burdekin made a
big impression at scrum half, giving Josh Whittaker (Centre) time and
space to work his magic feet and provide try scoring passes to both
wingers. Edward Jones (hooker) scored several well-deserved tries, with
his strength and determination seeing him cross the line.
No match for the 10’s
next week, but a stern test the week after against Lymm.
Squad with tries:), Josh
Critchley (1), Ewan McDonald, Josh Breeden (4), Josh Whittaker, Ewan
Jones ,Liam McKeown (1) ,Charlie Burdekin (1), Tom Abbott, Thomas Jolley

Widnes U10s 45
Heaton Moor U10s 0
Another good win for the
10’s against Heaton Moor on Sunday in bitterly cold and blustery
conditions.
Again the Wids were slow
to start, taking 10minutes to get the first score. However in the 2nd
half, the floodgates really opened with Widnes scoring 6 tries. Credit
to Heaton Moor for sticking with it, even though a score seemed unlikely
against the Wids who last conceded a try back in November. The Wid’s
strength of tackling and rucking, in defence, saw several turnovers and
breakaway tries from Fly half Josh Breeden and centre Ewan Jones.
Hooker Josh Critchley scored a well-deserved try out on the left wing,
breaking through several tackles en route to the line. Man Of The Match
went to Thomas Jolley (AKA Chabal) for his awesome tackling and support
play.
Squad with tries; Ben Mcquillan (1), Josh Critchley (1), Ewan
McDonald, Cameron Molyneux, Josh Breeden (4), Josh Whittaker, Jonny
Cooke (1), Ewan Jones (1), Liam McKeown (1), Charlie Burdekin, Tom
Abbott, Thomas Jolley, Josh Nolan

Widnes U10s 55
Collegiate U10s 0
Widnes Under 10’s
winning run continued on Sunday with a good win at close rivals,
Liverpool Collegiate. The Wids were slow to start, with the big
Collegiate pack winning plenty of ball. However, excellent defence
prevented the opposition from converting possession into points.
Collegiate were keen to
play to their strength, with a very narrow pitch, and forwards running
straight at the heart of the Widnes defence. The Wids woke up after 15
minutes and normal play resumed, with tries coming from a mixture of
forwards and backs. Josh Whittaker, playing Centre, rather than the
usual scrum half, scored several tries with great footwork and sniping
runs. Cameron Molyneux, scrum half, made the tackle of the match on the
biggest of the Collegiate props, putting his man down even though he
must have weighed twice as much as Cameron.
Josh Nolan, captain, as
always gave 110% with some outstanding tackling and won plenty of loose
ball.
Next week (Sunday
3rd Feb) the Wids host Heaton Moor, on Sunday. KO 11 am on Prescot Road
Pitches.
Team with Tries, Ben
McQuillan (2), Edward Jones, Liam McKeown, Josh Whittaker (3), Josh
Breeden (4), Josh Nolan, Thomas Jolley (2), Owen Keanne, Josh West,
Charlie Burdekin, Ewan Jones, Ewan McDonald, Josh Critchley, Cameron
Molyneux.

Under 10's Warriors Win Banbury Festival - Again!
The magnificent U10's travelled south into the heartland of
the nations Rugby Union County.
After last years successful venture, there was a determined and confident
approach to the task in hand, as the only northern representatives from a
pool of 12 teams attempted to retain their title at the Banbury Rugby
Festival, Oxfordshire.
The boys met Buckingham, Bletchley and Old Coventrians in the group stages
and won all three games. They then progressed to the Semi Final and came
across a strong looking Sutton Coldfield, but had no problems in reaching
the Final with a 20 - 5 victory.
They left the best till last when they met Towcestrians in the Final. The
well drilled forwards and backs stuck to their individual jobs with great
discipline whilst producing a magnificent team display that has many of the
opposition and neutral enthusiasts commenting on the Wids pace, support
play, teamwork and determination. The Wids won the Final 25 - 5!
The achievement of these wonderful warriors from Widnes, who continue to
excel and delight will surely be recognised, not only in the proud moist
eyes of their parents but also by the countries rugby clubs. Word will
surely get around; there is a club up north in Widnes with an U10's team
that is a force to be reckoned with.
Banbury Festival U10's Champions 2007 are: Bradley Cassidy, Alex Cooke, Paul
Cunningham, Adam Donohue, George Galligan, Ryan Ince, Robert Jacks, Luke
Jennett, Callum Jones, David Langford, Alex Nolan, Andrew Preston, Marcus
